Alejandra Hernandez

My name is Alejandra Hernandez, and I am currently a student at Northern Virginia Community
College pursuing a degree in Social Science. I immigrated from Honduras to the United States
when I was 12 years old. Moving to a new country without knowing English was one of the
biggest challenges I have faced, but it also helped me become stronger, more determined, and
more grateful for the opportunity to continue my education.

Life has not always been easy, but my experiences have motivated me to keep working hard and
build a better future for myself. Learning a new language, adapting to a new school system, and
facing challenges along the way taught me perseverance and responsibility. Even when things
have been difficult, I have continued to believe in the importance of education. I want to earn my
degree, continue growing, and work hard to reach the goals I have set for myself.

I am expected to graduate from NOVA in Fall 2026. During my time in college, I have worked
hard to continue my education while also balancing work, personal responsibilities, and
volunteer service in my community. I have also been recognized on the Dean’s List, which has
encouraged me to keep working toward my academic goals.

My program of study is Social Science because I am passionate about understanding people,
communities, and the different experiences that shape a person’s life. Through my classes, I have
learned more about human behavior, society, communication, and the importance of helping
others. These subjects have strengthened my interest in psychology and have helped me become
more confident in my future career path.

My plan is to complete my degree at NOVA by Fall 2026 and then transfer to George Mason
University. After transferring, I would like to continue my education in psychology. My
long-term goal is to become a psychologist so I can help people who are going through difficult
times and support individuals, families, and communities. I want to use my education to make a
positive difference in the lives of others.

In addition to being a student, I have gained work experience through different jobs, including
customer service and healthcare-related work. I have also volunteered at church through
children’s ministry, Vacation Bible School, and other activities. These experiences have helped
me develop responsibility, patience, leadership, and compassion. Working with children and
families has also reminded me how important it is to serve others with kindness and
understanding.

I am committed to continuing my education, completing my degree, and building a future where
I can use what I have learned to help others.
